Hoisin sauce

Hoisin sauce, or haixian sauce, is a Chinese dipping sauce. The word hoisin is a Romanization of the Chinese word for seafood. This dark brown Chinese barbeque sauce is fragrant and and thick in consistency. It has a strong salty and slightly sweet flavor. Mandarin-style hoisin sauce ingredients include starches such as sweet potato, wheat or rice, and water, sugar, soybeans, white distilled vinegar, salt, garlic, red chili peppers, and sometimes preservatives or coloring agents.
