Plum sauce
Plum sauce is a viscous, light brown sweet and sour condiment. Traditionally, it is made from the sweet pulp of ripened plums, combined with sugar, vinegar, salt, ginger and chiles. Today, commercially made plum sauce may include pumpkins, apricots, peaches, or even some melons as a main ingredient.
Plum sauce is used in Chinese cuisine as a dip for deep-fried dishes, such as spring rolls, egg rolls, noodles, and deep-fried chicken balls as well as for roast duck. As plum sauce has become increasingly popular in many countries, it is now sometimes used in steaks, burgers, and even in sushi.
Plum sauce also contains a number of essential nutrients. Plum sauce is low in calories. Most of the calories in plum sauce come from its carbohydrate content, most of which come from natural sugar from the fruit used to make the sauce, though some ready-made sauces may also contain added sugar as a flavor enhancer.
While plum sauces can be purchased in bottles at a number of grocery stores and supermarkets, you can make your own in 5-10 minutes. Use fresh ripened plums when making plum sauce for easier peel and to have more natural sugar.
