Black cardamom

Belonging to the ginger family, Black cardamon pods have a strong smoky flavor and aroma similar to chipotle peppers. It is quite different from the more commonly used green cardamom which has a sweet, citrusy flavor. Black cardamom pods can be used in soups, chowders, casseroles, and marinades for smoky flavor, much in the way bacon is used. Unlike green cardamom, this spice is rarely used in sweet dishes.
