Olea europaea, Olives, is native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean Basin as well as northern Iran at the south end of the Caspian Sea. Olives are thought to have originated in Crete between five and seven thousand years ago and quickly spread throughout Egypt, Greece, Palestine and Asia Minor.
