Romaine lettuce

Romaine or cos lettuce is a variety of lettuce which grows in a tall head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib down the center. It has a loaf-like shape with darker outer leaves. Unlike most lettuces, it is tolerant of heat.  Romaine is very common in Middle Eastern cuisine. This lettuce is popularly known as the key ingredient in Caesar salads.
