Reishi Mushroom
The lingzhi mushroom or reishi mushroom, which literally means "supernatural mushroom", most commonly refers to the closely related species, Ganoderma lucidum and Ganoderma tsugae. G. lucidum has been used as a medicinal mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used medicinally. Reishi has attained a reputation in the East as the ultimate herbal substance.
Reishi mushrooms usually have an antler or rounded, fan shape. There are six different types of Ganoderma lucidum: red, purple, green, white, yellow, and black. The red mushroom is the most well-studied and is said to possess the most healing properties.
Reishi mushrooms can be used to reinforce the immune system. Regular use of reishi mushrooms may help increase antioxidant levels. Some studies also found that reishi mushrooms bolster immunity and fight the spread of cancer cells. Reishi may also be beneficial to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and blood sugar regulation.
Reishi mushrooms usually are sold only in powder form in capsules, in liquid extracts and as tea, since they are too bitter and tough to be eaten as food. If your local store does not carry fresh reishi mushrooms, investigate the Asian food stores in your area as they oftentimes carry these specialty mushrooms.
Look for mushrooms that are firm, plump and clean. Those that are wrinkled or have wet slimy spots should be avoided.
